Sunita Avani Amin is a Dhrupad vocalist. She has been trained in the Dagar tradition with Ustad Baha-ud-din Dagar in Bangalore and then went on to learn from his uncle Ustad Zia Farid-ud-din Dagar at Dhrupad Sansar, IIT, Mumbai and Dhrupad Gurukul in Panvel, Maharashtra.

Sunita has a Bachelor’s degree in Dance and Liberal Arts in which she graduated with high honours from Oberlin College, Ohio, USA. She has also performed her Bharatanatyam Arangetram under the guidance of Smt. Padmini Rao while she studied in the The Valley School. KFI, Bangalore.

Sunita was appointed as Visiting Faculty of Musicology at BITS, Pilani and has taught Dhrupad (vocal) to many students of all ages in Chennai and Rajasthan. She has performed widely all over India and in the USA, and in concerts featuring Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ustad Wasif-ud-din Dagar, Pt. Kaivalya Kumar and Pt. Vishwamohan Bhatt. Sunita is a participant in Spicmacay’s programmes in Rajasthan, and has been awarded the Shri Gopal Purohit Kala Award. She has been entrusted to set up and manage the Vishva Dhrupad Gurukul inaugrated by Ustad Zia Farid-ud-din Dagar in Jaipur, and performs, teaches and conducts workshops in the Dhrupad vocal tradition. She has established the ‘National Clasical Performing Arts Festival’ (NCPAF) at the City Palace in Jaipur and has created and conducted the World Classical Music Workshop at Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur. She is an All India Radio Artiste, has performed and has been interviewed by Doordarshan Rajasthan in their features ‘Dhrupad Utsav’ in Udaipur and ‘Dharti Dhora Re’.

Sunita avani Amin’s pratham guru is Ustad Baha-ud-din Dagar although she went on to learn vocal from Ustad Zia Farid-ud-din Dagar at IIT, Mumbai.

Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar was born in Udaipur, India, where his father Ustad Ziauddin Khan Dagar was the court musician to the Maharaja of Udaipur. He was trained in the Rudra Veena and sitar along with vocal music by his father and later by his elder brother, the late Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. He is responsible to work great extent for popularizing Dhrupad music and more importantly keeping it alive. He has travelled and performed widely and conducted workshops in India and abroad. In recognition of his immense contribution to Indian classical music, the Ustad has been bestowed with many prestigious awards.

Ustad Baha’uddin Dagar, 20th in the lineage of Dagar Dhrupadiyas, was trained in the rudra-veena under his father Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, and his uncle Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar. As a research consultant at IIT Mumbai, he developed a new instrument, the Ras Veena. After the demise of his father, he continued training in music under the able guidance of his uncle Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar, an eminent Dhrupad vocalist. He is also a recipient of the Sanskriti Award for the year 2005-2006.

He has also recorded with labels such as: Music Today (India) ; Makars (France) ; India Music Archives (USA). He has been featured in various Classical Music programmes on the Doordarshan (CPC, and national) channels ; Star Plus Channel (Ninad) ; and on the Music Asia Channel. He has also been featured in the documentary film – Dhrupad, 1983 and the feature film – The Cloud Door, 1994 both directed by Mani Kaul.
